Political Misfits Discussion of Manchin's 180, Russia Prisoner Swap, Blather About and By Trump
My discussion with John Kiriakou on Political Misfits on Thursday, July 28th, working off this script:
There was big news from Capitol Hill last night when Senator Joe Manchin, the conservative Democrat from West Virginia, announced that he was doing a 180 and that he had come to an agreement with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to pass a climate and tax reform bill that, he said, would help to reduce inflation. Joe Biden is in dire need of a legislative victory, something that has largely eluded him over the past year and a half. In other news, the Biden Administration has offered to trade convicted arms smuggler Victor Bout to Russia in exchange for Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan. Bout is serving a 25-year sentence in a US penitentiary. Griner is currently on trial for bringing cannabis oil into Russia. And Whelan has been imprisoned in Moscow since 2018 on espionage charges. He was involved in corporate security at the time of his arrest. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will discuss a trade later this week with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over the objections of Attorney General Merrick Garland. And finally, we told you yesterday that two of former Vice President Mike Pence’s top aides have testified before a federal grand jury empaneled to investigate former President Trump’s actions on January 6, 2021. Now we’re learning that former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson is cooperating with the Justice Department’s criminal probe into Trump’s efforts to subvert the 2020 election. CNN says that this is the most wide-ranging investigation in the history of the Justice Department.
